Will You Please be Quiet, Please, by Raymond Carver
I was asked to read this in high school, so of course I did not appreciate it. For years
I had a chip on my shoulder about Raymond Carver, for no good reason. Well, in the interest
of enrichment and righting old wrongs, I decided it was time to revisit his writing, and
I'm glad I did. This is a powerful collection of short stories, examining people and families
often at their low ebb, emotionally, monetarily, interpersonally...all that said, no wonder I
didn't understand or appreciate this when I was 16! I mean, come on. At 41, I am much
better equipped to comprehend this material, and even relate to a good part of it.
So, in the
fullness of time, I think my reaction to this has been exactly appropriate, during both readings!
